Applied Choral Conducting
Joshua Stephen Smith is a conductor, pianist, creative collaborator, and coffee enthusiast based in Southwest Oklahoma. His passion for coffee comes second to his passion for music making with others. Joshua has completed over a decade of teaching both in public and private schools while distinguishing himself nationally as a talented young conductor, music director, collaborator, and teacher of choirs, orchestras, and church musicians. He has received critical acclaim for his recent work with “excellent and sensitive” conducting of Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker for Michael Bolger’s NUTCRACKER, a contemporary adaptation of the ballet, produced by The Complex Ballet Company (Putnam, CT).
Joshua builds on his previous studies in choral and orchestral conducting as a doctoral student under the tutelage of Richard Zielinski at The University of Oklahoma. He also currently serves as the Director of Music at Sharon Baptist Church. Through his interdisciplinary approach, Joshua carries the value of collaboration into score study, innovative programming, curriculum design, and ensemble leadership of the many children, youth, collegiate, and church choirs under his baton. When not making music, Joshua is reading about covenant epistemology, drinking coffee, and
enjoying a round of board/card games with family and friends.
