“I love everything about my job,” says Emily Carter ’16.
Carter, one of the few people able to land her dream job right out of college, graduated with a degree in public relations and a minor in marketing. She currently works as a Web Marketing Specialist at WebpageFX () in Harrisburg. The internet marketing agency allows Carter to work with a great team writing content for the company’s website, scheduling social media posts, sending email campaigns, prepping for webinars and much more.
Constantly working on different projects is one of the many reasons Carter loves her job. Plus, special events such as bring your pet to work month make coming in to the office exciting, even for a non-morning person like Carter.
Another reason Carter loves her job is the flexibility to come into work anytime between 8 and 10 a.m. The flexible start time helped Carter adjust to the long hours of a typical workday. “It’s tricky at first coming from college, but you just have to figure out a routine that works for you.”
While at Messiah, Carter gained much of the writing skills that she uses every day, including writing quickly and concisely, avoiding “be” verbs and grabbing attention. In fact, writing for the Communication Department is how she got the job at Webpage FX. Carter also led the marketing team for Collaboratory, where she gained writing and online marketing experience. Other experiences that have helped Carter excel at her job were taking the Public Relations Writing and PR Campaign classes as well as working for HOPE International as a writing intern.
Carter encourages current students, “Don’t be afraid to get involved and take advantage of opportunities that push you outside of your comfort zone. You never know what you’ll learn, who you’ll meet and where new opportunities will lead.”
