Why did you choose this graduate program?
Armed with the knowledge and experience from Messiah's nutrition program, I felt prepared for anything. Just what that would be, I couldn't yet decide. The Johns Hopkins Bayview Dietetic Internship provides clinical nutrition experiences in nearly every area of practice. It is a fast-paced and dynamic program, but after hearing about the preparedness of past Messiah dietetics graduates, I knew I was up for the challenge. I am grateful to be a part of this respected program, and look forward to exposure to many opportunities to guide me in my career.
What does your typical day look like- what responsibilities do you have?
Every day is different! I am assigned to a different unit and preceptor weekly in the realms of clinical nutrition, food service, or community dietetics. Experiences include anything from patient assessments and education to analyzing nutrients of recipes for the employee wellness program. I am usually balancing daily duties for patient care with weekly readings, homework, and research projects.
Why did you choose this degree at Messiah College?
I am intrigued by the intersection of physical, mental, and spiritual health. My career in dietetics will allow me to help others pursue wellness in these realms. In addition, having experienced the benefits of healthy food in my own life, helping others to do the same was a natural path.
How did your Messiah College degree prepare you for this career?
Knowledge and confidence. Following four years of instruction, my brain was full in the best way. I am excited to apply my skills and feel ready to do so. During the process of applying for my current program, I talked to other Messiah nutrition alumna who relayed that they felt beyond prepared in their own dietetics internships. That was encouraging to me at the time, and I can now confirm my own preparedness.
Is there any specific advice you would offer someone pursuing or considering this degree?
Dietetics is a diverse and growing field. My professors did an excellent job showing my classmates and me the many different career paths that are out there following a nutrition degree. There is something for nearly anyone. Find what gets you excited, and go for it.
Also, make the best of Messiah while you are there. It is a beautiful and enriching place. While community might be a buzzword, you will find you miss it once you are gone. Enjoy every moment!
