How has the Human Development and Family Science/Family & Consumer Science Education program helped to prepare you for your work?
For starters, the program helped me to understand better how the individual grows and develops within their environment. This knowledge is helpful in all areas of my life, not only my workplace. The Family and Consumer Sciences program gave me a strong background in child development, while this isn’t a subject I currently teach, it has been inexplicably helpful in helping students learn in any subject area. Lastly, I came to Messiah College with the expectation of completing my bachelors in Family and Consumer Sciences, but I did not expect to come out ready to take on my masters of counseling. The Human Development and Family Science/Family and Consumer Sciences Education program helped me to learn more about who I am, how I can help people, and the paths that I can take to get to a large number of vocations.
How does your faith interface with your work?
Working in the public school system, my faith integrates and develops within the way that I interact with others. I aim to show students every day that they are cared for and valuable. Doing the best I can to allow them a safe space to grow and develop both within my content area and just as human beings is my largest goal. Teaching, and soon to be school counseling is my way of truly becoming a servant to others and showing my faith through my interactions with others.
