Megan’s Career Journey

Megan graduated from the Family and Consumer Sciences Education program in May of 2014 and quickly landed her first job as a Middle School Family and Consumer Sciences Teacher for the Middletown Area School District. She went on multiple job interviews and got three job offers during the summer after graduation! She felt that the Middletown Area School District fit her best, and accepted the job offer.

Life as an Educator

Megan has students for the first nine weeks, or for the first marking period of the semester, and then the rotation changes, allowing her to teach all of the middle school students during the year. During her day, she teaches several different classes to sixth, seventh and eighth grade students. She also has other responsibilities, such as being on lunch duty, planning her classes, and attending staff meetings. All of her classes, with the exception of a math course, are an overview of Family and Consumer Sciences. She teaches four different units: Food and Nutrition, Child Development, Financial Resource Management, and Balancing Family and Community Life. During her time at Messiah, Megan found her classes that pertained to FCS most helpful because they helped her understand the inner workings of the classroom and her students. She also found her nutrition and her development courses beneficial. Megan uses projects and activities from her undergrad courses to assist her in teaching her own class.

Megan’s Advice

Megan has highlighted the importance of making connections while in college. She states, “I think making connections with the faculty is important. I have built many relationships over my time at Messiah that I still have. There was a project that I remembered doing in one of my classes that I wanted to complete with my students, but I didn’t remember the directions, so I just emailed that professor and got the resources I needed!”
