Scholarships

  • An initiative of the National Security Education Program
  • Provides unique funding opportunities for U.S. undergraduate students by focusing on geographic areas, languages, and fields of study that are critical to U.S. interests and underrepresented in study abroad.
  • Boren Scholars represent a vital pool of highly motivated individuals who wish to work in the federal arena.
  • In exchange for funding, Boren Scholars commit to working in the federal government for at least one year after graduation.
  • The maximum scholarship award is $10,000 for a semester abroad. Award amounts will vary depending on the length of study and student need.

"The Gilman Scholarship Program, sponsored by the U.S. Department of State's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs is an undergraduate program for U.S. citizens of limited financial means to enable them to study abroad, thereby internationalizing their outlook and better preparing them to thrive in the global economy."

  • Must be a U.S. citizen 
  • Must be receiving a Federal Pell Grant
  • Studying or interning in another country for at least 21 days
  • Deadline: Thursday, March 9, 2023
  • For undergraduate children of Active Duty Service Members
  • The U.S. Department of State’s Gilman-McCain Scholarship provides awards of $5,000 for undergraduate child dependents of active duty service members (Air Force, Army, Marine Corps, Navy, and Coast Guard) to study or intern abroad on credit-bearing programs.
  • Developed under the framework of the State Department’s Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program, the John McCain International Scholarship for the Children of Military Families (Gilman-McCain Scholarship) is open to eligible students enrolled at accredited U.S. colleges and universities who receive any type of Title IV federal financial aid.
  • Ashley’s Foundation first began in 2006 as a way of honoring the life of Ashley Soulé Conroy and as a way for Ashley’s family and friends to heal in the wake of her passing. Ashley loved travel, so her loved ones envisioned a small foundation, something that could offer scholarships in Ashley’s name to a few deserving university students planning to study abroad. They envisioned a way of helping these students realize their dream of studying in the far-flung corners of the globe that Ashley so dreamed of visiting herself someday.
  • Scholarships are awarded for the fall and spring semesters in the amount of $4,000.
  • Have at least a 2.5 cumulative GPA

  • The Uganda Studies Program has a small pool of funds available to assist low-income or students with high financial need.

  • Designed to make participation in Uganda Studies Program as available as possible for Black students

"The mission of the Fund for Education Abroad (FEA) is to provide scholarships and ongoing support to students who are underrepresented among the U.S. study abroad population."

  • $5,000 per semester and are not limited to specific programs, destinations, or fields of study
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident of the U.S.
  • Must plan to study abroad for a minimum of 4 weeks in country
  • Is committed to supporting education abroad in his/her campus community through work with the FEA and his/her campus education abroad staff upon return
  • Deadline: January 18, 2023 at 12:00 PM EST
  • Awarded yearly by Hostelling International USA (HI USA) to help fund travel with an educational or service component.
  • Applicants must be between the ages of 18-30, be a U.S. citizen or green card holder, demonstrate financial need as outlined in the application guidelines, and reside or attend school in one of the select metropolitan areas where HI USA has a community presence.
  • Scholarships are in the amount of $2,000, paid in $1,000 installments pre- and post-travel.
  • Scott’s Cheap Flights, which can be helpful as you start looking for flights to study abroad, offers a scholarship to help make those study abroad dreams possible.
  • Many of the Scott’s Cheap Flights team members had their first international travel experience when they studied abroad.
  • Awards $1,000 two times per year

  • Recipients must be accepted into a study abroad program.
  • Go Overseas will judge entries based on creativity, analytical thinking and passion for studying abroad
  • Deadline: Varies by scholarship, see website for details 

"At HI USA, we think travel should be as much about making a difference in the world as it is about seeing it. That’s why we’ve created Explore the World Travel Scholarships. Recipients receive $2,000 to help finance their international trip that includes an educational or service component."

  • Applicant must be a U.S. citizen or a permanent resident.
  • Plan to study outside of US between May 15, 2018 and August 31, 2019.
  • Deadline: TBD due to the ongoing pandemic 
  • This is a great resource for browsing all sorts of scholarships by major, location, and other traits
  • Deadline: Varies by scholarship, see website for details
  • Have at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA
  • Be enrolled in second or third year of undergraduate education at time of ISA program participation
  • Be accepted to an ISA program
  • Along with the scholarship application, the following items are required to be considered for an award: college transcripts, essay, resume, and supporting financial aid documents. For full eligibility and application requirements, follow the scholarship link

  • Must study in Italy
  • $1,000 Scholarship

  • Open to any student applying to study at JUC  for a semester.
  • Scholarship application should be submitted along with the JUC application.
  • Deadlines:
    • Fall Priority - April 15
    • Fall Regular - June 1
    • Spring Priority - September 15
    • Spring Regular - November 1

"To increase the global awareness and competencies of students studying at universities and colleges in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, the Pennsylvania Council for International Education (PACIE) and The Asia Institute are offering $2,000 in study abroad scholarship funding."

  • Must be an undergraduate, graduate, or doctoral student who is attending a university or college in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
  • Students applicants should be seeking to participate in a global learning experience in Asia in 2019. The global learning experience can be:
    • Short-term faculty-led program (10 days - 8 weeks) 
    • Semester or full year study abroad program
    • International internship (6 weeks minimum) 
    • International scholarly research (4 weeks minimum) 
  • Deadlines:
    • Summer Program - March 18
    • Fall - May 17
    • Spring - October 15

"To increase the global awareness and competencies of students studying at universities and colleges in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, the Pennsylvania Council for International Education (PACIE) and The Asia Institute are offering $2,000 in study abroad scholarship funding."

  • Students must be enrolled full-time at a high school, college or university in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania
  • The scholarships may be utilized to participate in a summer or semester ISA program, including internships, service-learning or study options. 
  • Students may submit their scholarship and program applications simultaneously.
  • Deadline:
    • Fall - May 17
    • Spring - October 15
  • Currently (or within the next year) attending an accredited university or college (undergraduate and graduate students are both eligible)
  • Deadline: December 4, 2023

"Temple students studying at Temple University Rome for the fall or spring may apply for a Temple Rome Scholarship to help defray the costs of studying in Rome. Several are awarded each semester and range in amount from $500 to a maximum award of $3,000 for each semester. Temple students may apply by completing the scholarship application and essay, available within the online program application."

  • Recipients must be enrolled as a full-time, matriculated undergraduate at the time of application
  • Applicant must have a 3.0 cumulative grade point average
  • Applicant must be enrolled as a full-time student at Temple University Rome; demonstrate financial need
  • Applicant must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident
  • Deadlines:
    • Fall - April 1
    • Spring - October 1

"The Tortuga Study Abroad Scholarship is awarded biannually to passionate students who want to explore the world. The winner of the Tortuga Study Abroad Scholarship will receive $1,000 scholarship for studying abroad and 1 travel backpack."

  • Must be a U.S. citizen, permanent resident, or student visa holder
  • Have applied to or been accepted into a study abroad program eligible for credit by your college or university
  • Deadlines:
    • Fall 2023 - April 15, 2023
    • Spring 2024 - November 15, 2023

"Selected scholarship recipients will receive USD $2,500 each to contribute toward tuition or school fees at an accredited post-secondary institution and will be selected based on criteria relating to the program's three pillars: Perseverance, Aspiration, and Community-Mindedness."

  • Must be pursuing a degree/field of study in science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and business/entrepreneurship
