Spring break—the time of year when most students dream of sitting poolside in the warmest weather, fleeing the freezing temperatures on the tail end of winter. But what if instead of fleeing this not so “ideal” version of the spring break you had imagined, you embraced it? Here are seven simple ways you can make the most of your spring break this year, even if you’re not on the beach soaking in the sun.

1. Take a mental break.

This is the middle of the spring semester, so chances are you are drained and need to take some time away from all the things causing you stress in the first place. Put your backpack somewhere out of sight and allow yourself to truly relax!

2. Read a book.

Start a book! A lot of us have that list of books that we have been meaning to get to, but just haven’t had the chance to quite yet. This is the perfect time to do that! If you haven’t even had time to think about what’s out there, do some research on what’s new or on some topics that may interest you.

3. Reconnect with old friends.

You have most likely not been home for this long since winter break. Reach out to old high school friends or get together with family that you have not been able to see in a while. Take advantage of being close to home to reconnect with the special people in your life.

4. Explore!

Although you may be home and not out on a boat somewhere, you can still explore! Grab some friends and go to that restaurant you have never tried before. Take a trip to the newest mall or attraction in your hometown. Go for a hike in the warming sun (spring is in the air, after all!).

5. Catch up on your favorite show.

Binge watching is usually frowned upon, and that is for a very good reason. In no way am I encouraging you to spend countless hours watching Friends, but if you have been a couple episodes behind on your favorite show, take some time out of your day to watch an episode as you are relaxing at home.

6. Sleep!

There have been many sleepless nights between writing papers and studying for midterms, but right now, you get a break from all of that. Make sure you catch up on sleep and make an effort to go to bed at a decent time. Keeping a good sleep schedule will help you feel refreshed and ready to go once it is time for you to be back on campus.

7. Declutter your closet.

Use this time to do a little spring cleaning—give away, sell or toss the stuff you don’t need anymore.
