3 easy steps to saving money as a college student
By Carla Kelly '22
College isn’t cheap by any means and any current college student could tell you that! From tuition to the books and school supplies, costs can accumulate quickly. But don’t let these expenses discourage you from saving money! Here are some easy ways to save money throughout what can be some pretty expensive college years.
-
Find inexpensive entertainment.
It can be very tempting to go out every weekend to visit shopping malls or the movies, but I suggest taking a different route! Find ways you and your friends can have fun on campus. Check out athletic schedules and your school’s student activity board for what’s going on at your school. Be creative and make do with what’s around you!
-
You don’t NEED that coffee run.
For many college students, caffeine is what gets them through the day. However, it’s helpful to avoid visiting Starbucks multiple times a week. Try getting coffee after your next meal in the dining hall or making it yourself.
-
Do your research before buying your books.
Books can cost up to hundreds of dollars each semester. It is extremely helpful to take your list of books to different online stores that offer discounted books and compare prices. They may be used or obtained through a rental, but both offer a good alternative to paying the full price. and Amazon Rental are two good and reliable options. Also, don’t forget to check if your school has an online social media network for book sharing (tip: check Facebook!).
While these aren’t groundbreaking tips, they are smaller expenses that can add up rather quickly. Beginning with these smaller steps is a helpful way to start your journey to saving money!
