Educator International Travel – Insurance Implications

There are three categories of Educator international travel that involve Messiah University:

  1. Educators traveling with students;
  2. Educators traveling in fulfillment of job expectations and/or as a request from their supervisor;
  3. Educators involved in optional travel using University funds.

Categories 1 and 2 require vetting and approval by Messiah’s International Risk Management Committee.  However, Educators’ involved in optional travel using University funds (Category 3) are not vetted by the International Risk Management Committee and are therefore required to do their own research to be aware of and assess the risks of their travel.

All participants are responsible to determine their unique insurance needs when preparing to travel abroad.  The following are insurance implications for Educators traveling internationally through Messiah University:

  • Chubb Group of Ins Co. (institutional blanket policy)
    • Who is covered?  All registered, full-time students, faculty, staff, employees, volunteers, chaperones, and their spouses and children, traveling outside of the United States on approved, school sponsored programs.
    • What is included in coverage?
      • $100,000 Medical Coverage, $0 Deductible
      • Political and Natural Disaster Evacuation – up to $100,000
      • Accidental Death and Dismemberment - $15,000
      • Repatriation of Remains
      • Mental Health, Dental and Chiropractic care
    • What is the cost?
      • $15 per participant, per week
      • For approved international experiences involving students (such as cross-cultural courses), the cost is built into the travel budget of that experience.
      • For individual Educators traveling in Categories 2 & 3, the educator's department will need to cover the cost.
    • This policy is coordinated by the Agape Center for Local & Global Engagement.
  • UNUM Insurance (institutional employee life insurance policy)
    • Who is covered?  All benefit eligible Messiah employees.
    • What is included in coverage?  Term Life Insurance, Accidental Death and Dismemberment, Short Term Disability, Long Term Disability. 
    • What is the cost?  This cost of the coverage is paid by the University for benefit eligible employees.
  • UNUM (voluntary employee life insurance policy)
    • Who is covered?  Employees who purchase coverage during open enrollment each May and qualify for coverage based on health status.
    • What is included in coverage? Term Life Insurance
    • What is the cost? The cost varies significantly depending on age, health and amount of coverage.
