1. Ways of Knowing

General education provides students with broad knowledge outside of their specialized area of study. Because Messiah is a university of liberal and applied arts and sciences, broad knowledge is essential to students’ education. Students who are broadly educated are knowledgeable about the human and natural world. They are curious and cultivate empathy. The ways of knowing requirements are framed as such because students learn that when they look for truth through the lens of various disciplines, the way truth is discerned and validated differs. Students gain an appreciation for the truths that emerge when we look through the lens of various disciplines. These courses also develop critical thinking and help students examine the relationship between knowledge of the world and Christian Faith.
