1.3 Social Scientific Ways of Knowing

Social scientific ways of knowing includes one three-credit course in the social sciences.

Social Sciences Course Objectives

  • Requirement: One three-credit course in the social sciences
  • Level: 100-200
  • Sequence: Recommended for any semester during the first and second years.
  • Course Proposal: Courses appropriate to the course learning objectives and level designations are proposed by faculty in departments with disciplinary expertise in the social sciences, approved by General Education Committee and Curriculum Committee, and reported to the Community of Educators for information and review.

By the completion of the course students will demonstrate the ability to:

  1. Identify socio-cultural contexts that shape human experience. (Knowledge of the World)
  2. Analyze important variables contributing to one or more social problems/issues. (Knowledge of the World)
  3. Critically reflect on interactions between self and others, using social science frameworks. (Critical and Creative Thinking)
  4. Describe the methods of inquiry that lead to knowledge in the social sciences. (Critical and Creative Thinking)
  5. Articulate connections between Christian faith and social scientific forms of reasoning. (Christian Faith)
